Mental Health Benefits for Uninsured in Tennessee

Posted By atorturedsoul on November 23, 2009

Behavioral Health Safety Net of Tennessee provides basic mental health services for the uninsured. CoverRx provides affordable access to mental health medications.

It seems that Tennessee does care about its mentally ill residents. In addition to the recently introduced “Safe ’til Stable” and Jericho initiatives, they also provide assistance to help the uninsured and low income persons to obtain basic mental health care and more affordable medications through several programs.

Recently, it was announced that some medications used to treat bipolar disorder will see a sharp decrease in price in 2011. At this time, many of the medications are still unaffordable even for those of us who have insurance. It was also announced that the Mental Health Parity Act will increase insurance benefits for mental health care. Even so, there are those among us who are uninsured and simply cannot afford the medications or treatments for bipolar disorder. If you are a resident of Tennessee and do not have insurance, the Safety Net may be able to help you get the treatments you need and deserve.

As stated on the Tennessee website:

What are the eligibility criteria for Behavioral Health Safety Net of TN assistance?

  • Been determined ineligible for TennCare or have a pending TennCare application; and
  • Not have access to private health insurance, or the private health insurance lacks mental health coverage or all mental health benefits under private health insurance has been exhausted; and
  • Not have Medicare coverage; and
  • Not be actively receiving benefits through the Veteran’s Administration; and
  • Be a U.S. citizen or a legal resident alien; and
  • Be a resident of Tennessee; and
  • Have been identified as SPMI (CRG = 1, 2, or 3); and
  • Have family income no greater than 100% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL); and
  • Must not be an inmate; and
  • Must be aged 19 to 64.

If you or a loved one have bipolar disorder or any other mental illness and are an uninsured resident of the state of Tennessee, you should certainly check to see if you are eligible for benefits under the Behavioral Health Safety Net or CoverRx.

Thx for your excellent article on the uninsured.. Very informative. Finding a cure through medication would be helpful, but as you know, a lot could be done by all of us thru proper diet and exercise. Self discipline however can be tough. But if circumstances exist whereby
medication is needed, I wanted to possible help some people out there by letting them
know about a site that few people know about, but can help greatly in paying less for all
their medications, diabetes included. I have known as least 10 people it has helped, some diabetic, some with other prescriptions they get, and hopefully this will help get the word out. The site is http://www.medpap.ws and tho it’s “free,” the “catch” is that they want you
in their store hoping you will impulse shop and pick up other items while you are there.
One of the oldest marketing ploys in the world, but if you can just use the card….enjoy
the savings, and don’t buy anything else you don’t truly need, you will beat the system.
There also is a short 1 minute video to explain how it works. It is a good program that
saves you money so I hope u take advantage of it. Take care and hopefully great health
will be a reality for all of us one day.
