Decrease in price for drugs used to treat bipolar disorder

Prescription drug costs for medications used to treat bipolar disorder will decrease significantly in 2011.
As patents for some well known drugs expire, the market will be open for generic versions of expensive brand name drugs used to treat bipolar disorder and depression. As a result, the bipolar disorder drug market will have lost more than $1 billion in value by 2018. This may be bad news for big pharma, but it’s certainly good news for consumers.
What patents will expire in 2011?
Seroquel
Seroquel (quetiapine fumerate) is manufactured by AstraZeneca. I am sure many are pleased to hear they will be able to obtain this drug at a cheaper price.
Zyprexa
Zyprexa or olanzapine, manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb, was recently involved in a major lawsuit so they will very likely feel the effect of generic version hitting the market.
Abilify
Abilify (aripiprazole) is manufactured by Otsuka and is one of the most expensive antipsychotics on the market today. A generic version will be appreciated by many who have been prescribed this high dollar medication.
Geodon
Geodon(ziprasidone) is manufactured by Pfizer and its patent will also be expiring.
As a result, sales of these four products alone in the US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and Japan will decline from more than $4 billion last year to just under $3 billion by 2018, and the entire market for bipolar disorder drug treatments will fall from $6.3 billion to around $5 billion over the period, states a recent report.
Antidepressants that will open up to generics are:
- Effexor XR (venlaxafine), manufactured by Pfizer (formerly Wyeth)
- Cymbalta/ Xeristar (duloxetine), manufactured by Eli Lilly
- Lexapro/ Cipralex (escitalopram), manufactured by Forest/ Lundbeck
Knowing lower prices are around the corner is certainly good news to all of us!

If there is a generic available, for any medication, it’s the way to go. Generics are the bioequivalent to name brand drugs and cost substantially less. There is actually a website called ‘Medtipster’ that enables you to locate low-cost, generic prescriptions from reputable pharmacies in your area. You just tell the site what medication you need, the dosage and your zip code and Medtipster will direct you to the least expensive retailer. It’s easy to use and makes finding affordable prescriptions easy…google search “Medtipster” and take a look
The price will definitely decrease for the seroquel drugs after the patent ending.
