Multiple personality types in bipolar disorder
Posted By atorturedsoul on October 23, 2009
Do you have bipolar disorder? Do you have several distinct personalities? I do. No, I haven’t named them, but they are there all the same. Here they are:
Super Woman
This personality is up in your face and has an “I don’t give a damn” attitude. It doesn’t hit women; it likes to hit men. Make me mad, meet my club. I snap and I will temporarily black out and do stupid things. This personality is invincible and loves making a scene. It’s definitely a manic personality, but can present itself when trying to stave off depression. It is noted for its aggression.
Music preferences: Gangster rap-Master P, TRU, Triple Six (NOT MTV Triple Six, we’re talking underground tapes from Orange Mound), Playa Fly, and many more.
This personality’s catch phrase? “I’m not the one.”
Socialite
This personality doesn’t come out to play much any more, but sometimes appears when I am in a crowd and I get nervous. I will talk up a storm and engage anyone in conversation. It’s a manic personality that never appears if I am more than a little depressed.
Music preferences: Soft rock, pop, and occasionally hip hop
This personality’s catch phrase? It varies, but it can be “Oh my god!”, or “I know, right?”
Cynic
Who would have though that, huh? This personality questions everything. This is the personality that I learn a lot of things from. I will hear something I question and I must find out the truth. It will spend hours researching even mundane things. This personality generally results from irritability and refuses to let anything go, especially when I know I’m right. With this personality, you can’t say anything right, so best leave this one alone. It has appeared during both depression and mania
Music Preferences: Hard Rock, Linkin Park, Korn, Metallica, Limp Bizkit
This personality’s catch phrase? “Look here…” or “Are you kidding me?” accompanied by rolling the eyes or shaking the head.
The Angry One
This personality deserves such a regal sounding title. This one is beyond reason. There isn’t much to explain-it usually ends up in blind rage with only a tad of provocation. This one comes out as the result of mania or depression and doesn’t seem to be tied to much other than a sharp and sudden mood swing.
Music preferences: This personality doesn’t hear music. It doesn’t hear anything.
This personality’s catch phrase? You’re lucky if this one says anything to give warning. It’s usually just “the look”, but if you get a shake of the head and a “uhh hmm” before the look-run for your life.
Deny and Deflect
This is one of my depressed personalities, but it tends to blame everything on other people. It believes everyone has let them down. It loves to listen to music and dish out criticism and deflect. This one is trying hard to steer clear of severe depression by lashing out at others.
Music Preferences: Numb is a biggie with this one…anything similar.
This personality’s catch phrase? Something like, “I don’t have a problem; you’re the problem.” Or “I don’t want to talk to you. It wouldn’t be intelligent conversation.”.
Chicken Little
This is a depressed personality that always believes the sky is falling. Nothing is right. Nothing will ever be right and there’s no sense in trying to fix it because it won’t work. Suicidal ideation appears with this one. If this personality sticks around too long, severe depression and the End is Near personality will follow. Self pity is big with this one. You can get away with a lot more with this one because it just doesn’t care any more.
Music Preferences: Anything by the Cure or anything sad and depressing.
This personality’s catch phrase? “Who cares?” or “What do you care?” It has lost its “give a damn”.
The End is Near
This is a severely depressed personality and upon its arrival, it already has everything planned out and is seriously contemplating the right moment. This one worries me. I have no control in this state and I will ask for help only once. So far, I’ve been lucky and have been able to express my intentions and get help. If this one is ignored or unnoticed, suicide or a suicide attempt is highly likely.
Music Preferences: It doesn’t care about anything so music is a non-issue to this one.
This personality’s catch phrase? There isn’t one. It doesn’t care to talk much. If it suddenly develops a sunny side, it has already decided and hiding it.
That sums up the complex being that is me. I am an ever changing mixture of these distinct personalities and I sometimes get lost in them and there is no way to figure out which is the real me. I’m multi faceted-and I’m ok with that.
Before it is asked, I do not have Dissociative Identity Disorder. I have bipolar disorder and the mood swings associated with it create different reactions that manifest in pretty much the same manner each time. I call these “personalities”, but they really describe how I react to varying moods. I’m pretty certain others who have had bipolar disorder for a while have noticed the same tendencies.
I would love to hear if you have noticed something similar.

Done them all. Do them all. Am them all. Ringing, ringing bells.
Glad to see I’m not the only one.
Oh yeah, especially The Angry One, Deny & Deflect and The End is Near. Denying & Deflecting allllll over the place. I do have a Super Woman, but she wants to fix things for everyone ELSE (anyone not me, that is), and thinks she can. I also have a Wise Woman that pops up on occasion – she’s the one that says “Really? You really want to spend the afternoon ruminating over that perceived mistake from 15 years ago? Nah – let’s go paint or something.” She comes out more with the new meds I’m on, I’m damn happy to say.
I think my Wise Woman is scared of the Angry One because she hasn’t appeared in some time now. My “voice of reason” went on vacation. lol Honestly, I think it’s time for a change in meds for me. Glad to hear the new meds are helping!
Bipolar disorder and dissociative identity disorder are two very different disorders. It is possible to have both, but that is actually very rare. You state that most people with DID also have bipolar disorder, and that is simply incorrect.
You also state that the same medications are used to treat the two conditions. That is incorrect as well. There actually are no medications used to treat DID. Medication may be used to treat anxiety, depression, or sleep problems that may occur along with DID, but there are no meds that treat DID itself. Bipolar disorder, on the other hand, is usually treated with mood stabalizers or anti-convulsive medications. Those are not prescribed to treat DID. They would only be prescribed for a person with DID if that person also had bipolar disorder (which is rather rare).

Perhaps you misunderstood.

Nowhere in the article was medication mentioned for either condition.
Perhaps you should re-read the article.
Oh, I got them all! ahahaha…but I have some more….
The Evil One
its when i’m in my depressed episode and she’s the one who advises me to hurt myself, or others. in this personality, I have hallucinations about anything evil…
The Inoccent
i dunno when this occurs, but this is the time when I play innocent, as if i dont know anything. but i know it. but i feel i dont know it so i believe that i dont really know it. i just realize later that i do now about it. i flash a big innocent eyes at them, blink them several times a minute, pout mylips and talk in childish way.
The cartoon character
its a crazy and the most animated, thic-skinned and childish personality i have. i can go jumping, tumbling, shouting “powers!!!!” and posing like cartoon characters infront of people..i talk about useless and crazy thins, i laugh hard and make fun of people. i’m stupid in thiskind of manic episode…
hahaha…
that’s all…hahaahhaahhahahahahahahaha
Oh I forgot, I’m 20 yrs old…female….and a soon-to-be teacher,,,what? how can i teach with this kind of disease??? hahahaha
My 11 year old son has a teacher that uses Yu-gi-oh, Pokemon and Bakugan to motivate her students. She is, of course, his favorite teacher. She gives them cards for making 100s on quizzes and let’s them battle in class if they get their work done early. She battles with them. While it motivates the students, it also lets her get rid of some of her own energy and deal with her own issues. It works well for her and she is a great teacher. I think it is a matter of finding a way to release it rather than to hide it, as we know is useless. If you will be teaching elementary students, I’m betting it will work for you rather than against you. Your students may relate to you better because of the energy you have. I hope that helps.
