The new Cash for Clunkers (or CARS) rebate is really picking up steam and giving buyers a great incentive to trade in their gas guzzlers. Chrysler is giving buyers an even bigger reason to consider purchasing a Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep vehicle.

Yesterday, Chrysler LLC announced that beginning on Thursday, July 23, 2009 (today) the company will match the $4500 rebate.  This means that qualified buyers can receive up to $9,000 in rebates on the purchase of a new vehicle. Chrysler will offer the additional rebate until August 31, 2009. According to Edmunds.com, Chrysler offers 16 vehicles that qualify for the CARS rebate.

They will also offer a $4500 rebate to buyers who are not trading in a vehicle under the CARS program. If you are not interested in taking advantage of the $4500 rebate, you can opt for 0% interest financing.

What vehicles qualify for the CARS rebate?

Your vehicle must:

• Get a COMBINED fuel economy of 18 MPG or less (verify at http://www.fueleconomy.gov/)
• Be under 25 years old and in running condition
• Be registered to you for at least one year

The vehicle being purchased must:

• Be brand new (leases must be at least 5 years in length)
• Have an MSRP less than $45,000
• Have a COMBINED fuel economy of 22 MPG or more (verify at http://www.fueleconomy.gov/)

What about trucks and SUV’s?

• A compact truck or SUV must have a COMBINED fuel economy of at least 18 miles per gallon.
• A full-size truck or SUV must have a COMBINED fuel economy rating of 15 miles per gallon or better.

How much do I qualify for?

• A car with a COMBINED fuel economy of at least 4 MPG more than your old vehicle qualifies for $3500.
• A car with a COMBINED fuel economy of at least 10 MPG more than your old vehicle qualifies for $4500.
• A truck or SUV with a COMBINED fuel economy of at least 2 MPG more than your old vehicle qualifies for $3500.
• A truck or SUV with a COMBINED fuel economy of at least 5 MPG more than your old vehicle qualifies for $4500.

A local dealership advertised a Dodge Caliber for $7988. It was a stripped down version with no air and a manual transmission but it was brand new. If you qualify for a $4500 CARS rebate, Chrysler will double that to $9000. You COULD get a no-frills new car just for paying the TTL. (Chrysler also has a lifetime power train warranty making the deal even sweeter.) You might be able to get other vehicles for just a few thousand dollars. If you already own a Chrysler product, you’re likely to receive an additional rebate for customer loyalty.

Start checking your local dealers’ prices and you might be able to find a really sweet deal.
