While online tests and screening tools can identify potential symptoms, they cannot diagnose bipolar disorder.  You must understand that many of these symptoms can be present in a variety of mental illnesses. Only a mental health professional can diagnose and treat bipolar disorder.

If you have just recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you may be wondering about your treatment options. There are many medications available for the treatment of bipolar disorder and certain medications work best for certain symptoms. Only your doctor can decide which is the best option for you. Be sure to ask about potential side effects and which ones require immediate attention.

It is also important to note that not all medications work for everyone. It is not uncommon for someone to change medications several times before finding one that works well. You will be given a small dose that is intended to be increased to reach its full effectiveness. It also takes time for the medications to take effect and you will not feel a difference right away. Most medications take about two weeks but it can also take a month or more. Be patient and work closely with your doctor. If your symptoms begin to improve but don’t disappear, you may just need an increase in dosage. Be patient!

Over time, you may need several increases in dosage as your body becomes accustomed to the medication. Your symptoms may return or new symptoms may appear which may require a change in medication or an increase in dosage or even the addition of another medication. It is not uncommon for people with bipolar disorder to take more than one medication. In fact, it’s rather common.

The treatment of bipolar disorder can also include therapy or appointments with a doctor who will manage your medication(s). Hospitalization may occasionally be necessary to monitor changes in medication, especially if suicidal ideation is present.

The only person who can decide what treatment is appropriate for you is your doctor. Don’t get discouraged. You must understand that sometimes it takes time to find the right medication(s) and they will likely be adjusted often.

Don’t give up hope and stay the course! It can be a long, rocky road sometimes.
