Michael Jackson

I had planned to post about recent discoveries about bipolar disorder, but with Michael Jackson’s Memorial taking place today it seems more fitting to talk about the public tribute.

Many artists have performed and spoken at this memorial, including Mariah Carey performing “I’ll be there”. This was one of the biggest hits ever produced by the Jackson Five. Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder and Jennifer Hudson have already performed and Queen Latifah read a poem and spoke about how Michael influenced the world.

Kobe Bryant and Shaq spoke about their personal moments with Michael and how fortunate the children were to have a loving family to care for them after the untimely death of their father. Reverend Al Sharpton spoke about Jackson’s success as a performer over several decades and his perseverance during recent difficult times.

John Mayer performed Jackson’s song “Why”. I must say he did an impressive job and it was a good decision to make it mostly instrumental. Brooke Shields was unable to hide her emotions during her speech about her lengthy personal relationship with Michael, referring to him once as “MJ”, and joking about his glove. She compared him to “The Little Prince” and read a passage from the book.

His older brother, Jermaine, performed “Smile”, from Michael’s “History” album while wearing one of the signature sequined gloves Michael was often seen wearing. He was overwhelmed by emotion at the end of the song and for a moment I thought he would be unable to finish the selection. Martin Luther King III and Bernice King, children of Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke about Jackson’s lifetime of achievements, proclaiming him to be, “truly the best at what he was”, and saying, “rest in peace, our brother, Michael.”

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas spoke about Michael’s innocence in a court case a few years ago and commended him for being a great humanitarian, quoting his song “Man in the Mirror”. She also spoke about Michael speaking to government officials in Washington about the need to address the spread of HIV/AIDS.

While the Staples Center is packed with many who wish to pay their final respects to Mr. Jackson, many fans have gathered outside Neverland Ranch because they feel closer to him there. Regardless of where they are, fans have covered Los Angeles and Los Angeles County.

Part 2 of my recap of Jackson’s public memorial, Michael Jackson: The Farewell, will follow.
