Michael Jackson

This is part two of my recap of Michael Jackson: The Farewell, the public memorial for the performer.

Usher performed “Gone too soon” (a song Michael wrote for Ryan White, who died of AIDS) and walked down to Michael’s casket and lovingly laid his hand on the top. He broke down in tears at the end of the song and paused momentarily. Afterwards he walked down to speak to his mother, Katherine Jackson.

They played a snippet of the video of the Jackson Five performing “Who’s Loving You”, written by Smokey Robinson. Smokey then spoke about how well they covered his song and stated he was amazed by the amount of soul 10 year old Michael had and proclaimed him to be his brother.

Shaheen Jafargholi, a finalist in Britain’s Got Talent, performed “Who’s Loving You” in its entirety and briefly spoke about Michael’s influence in music. Director of Michael’s concerts, Kenny Ortega, said Michael Jackson invited young Shaheen to be there with him during the concerts in London. Ortega spoke of Jackson’s impending triumphant return to the music world that had been planned before his death.

“We are the World” was performed by Michael’s London tour group and were joined by Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Hudson, Janet Jackson, Jackson’s brothers, and many others. This song is a prime example of Jackson’s humanitarian efforts.

“Heal the World”, written by Michael Jackson, was the final selection performed during the memorial service. Jermaine Jackson thanked everyone for coming to the memorial and expressed the family’s appreciation for their love and support. Marlon Jackson began speaking and had to take a moment to  compose himself before continuing. Michael’s children stood alongside the family onstage. Jackson’s daughter, 11 year old Paris Jackson, spoke saying, “daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine”.

Jackson’s body was carried out of the Staples Center with a chorus singing in the background.

  4. Michael Jackson would still be remembered as the only King of Pop. We would surely miss him.

  5. Interesting comments about Michael Jackson. I just want to add how sad Jackson’s sudden death is. He was truly original and will be the ‘King of Pop’ for a long time to come.
