All About Bipolar: When it rains it pours

Posted By atorturedsoul on June 23, 2009

It just keeps getting better and better, I tell you. We got more bad news today. When it rains, it pours.

My husband found out today that next week they will be off a day and a half without pay. They will also be off four days in September without pay. Isn’t that lovely?

Yesterday I dug through our escrow statement to find out why our mortgage payment was going to be increased more than $200. Our insurance premium went up drastically. We called to find out why. The company told us that it was because of the distance between our house and a fire station or fire hydrant. I told them that it isn’t like either of them has moved in the past eight years. Why is it being increased now? It’s because they now use a computer system with geocodes that affects the rates. So, because they have a new computer system our rates have almost tripled. We’re paying an extra $1163 because of this new system.

We told them that this was unacceptable and reminded them that we have four policies with them and we would cancel all of them if we have to change companies to obtain cheaper rates for our homeowner’s policy. He got his supervisor on the phone then. He said the system had given us a code 10 for being 3 ½ to 5 miles from a fire station or hydrant. So if it were indeed 5 miles, that’s over $200 a year per mile. The guy asked how close we are to a hydrant. I told him I didn’t know. I live out in the country for crying out loud. We don’t have sidewalks so the hydrants are in the grass and not spotted easily. However, the fire department informed us that we’re only about 1,000 yards from a hydrant. (They were in the area over the weekend putting out a fire somewhere near us.) The insurance company told us to call the fire department and find out what code we really are and have them fax it to them. If we aren’t a code 10, they will adjust the rates.

Just in case the rate doesn’t go back to what it was before, I asked them how long it would take them to refund the policy premium to my escrow account. It will take 2 to 3 weeks. That means I will have to pay the entire premium out of pocket and then wait to be reimbursed. I would then have to deal with the mortgage company and explain that this policy was cancelled and provide proof of insurance coverage. Who knows how much trouble it will be to get our payment straightened back out and put a new policy into escrow. Either way, it’s going to be a headache-and I have to get all of this taken care of before August or we will have to pay the larger payment. Ugh.

It’s a big mess but I am working on getting it straightened out. The last few weeks were filled with good news. I knew it wouldn’t last. Now I have to hold on to what little sanity I have left…and that’s not much at this point.
